Old Projects

Posted by Hyptosis - November 26th, 2016

Over the years of making games here at NG I had a lot of projects that didn't make it. Recently I have been digging through old files, and wanted to share some of these. Keep in mind, all of these are broken! Some are just mockups, most stop working a little ways in. But still, it was a great trip down memory lane. Let me know what you guys thik! I'll try to provide any information I can remember about them. I want to also share how many projects don't make it when doing game dev. If there are no instructions about controls, try arrows and wasd, those are always my defaults.

GoblinZ

This was a game I was pretty excited about. I wanted to make a cute SOtN, but because of a Stencyl crash durring save and me at the time not having good backup procedures in place, I lost a significant part of the project. It ends abruptly and even the Stencyl crew could not help me recover it. But they did try, and I appreciated it.

Alice is Dead HD

Probably the game I get asked about most, and for now I really can say Alice is Dead. As of now there are no plans to revive her, at least not for many years. Really love the ol' girl though.

SPACE 4X SIM

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/68e8d2f07424ac6ce36583fd9ec60925

This was a project that never got past mockups. I had forgot about it until I stumbled onto the mockups last night, I decided to share them. I LOVE 4X games, like, maybe my favorite genre. They're also hard as hell to make.

SPACE RTS SIM

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/ad851a398b11ba497b344a95c000650b

This was a space RTS I was working on, didn't get far. Was going to kind of be like GuildDungeons in space. You can see I didn't get far, but the ships do move, their mass indicates their speeds. Never got engines in the game.

MANE

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/57a98d878a23113c962885bceb9a0949 -- story images

Mane was a project I was very excited about, I was building it in Stencyl and hit limitations in both Stencyl and my own abilities as a programmer. I want to one day pick it up again, either as a comic, or maybe a side scroller once again.

INFINITE PARADIGM

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/b5afafb019679994ab96391d5470460c

This was a visual novel I wanted to make. A more serious, scifi themed Sagittarian. It didn't seem to stir much interest in play testers though and I never got pasdt the crew hiring process. Hania's music is the bomb right? Protip that no one cares about, haha, if you wait long enough on the intro, the glass actually bumps into the watch, I remember being proud of that tiny unnoticable effect. Lawls.

REBEL SKY

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/0cb8154d4cec2653499be53681a22ebb

I might have actually released a small demo of Rebel Sky, but I never should have. It was to be a kind of love story to many NES games and ANIME I grew up on. I don't remember anyone liking this project at all, so I moved on.

PANGOLIN

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/f57ffb2240a1c469068658def3e88591

Pangolin was a webcomic I wanted to make, but never found the time. I shopped it around a little and there never was much interest anyway. I even made a few colored pages to give an idea what I final product would look like. It was to be a dieselpunk mafia type story. Looks like I don't have any of the colored panels online anymore except this one.

MUD PROJECT

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/fccec7ecf5e268cc76c5a3bf365cd57c
http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/4c752cee49b15ee55b182e64ec66963a

I don't remember a whole lot about this game, it was going to be a multiuser dungeon, with all 3d maps. These screenshots show I was trying everything I could to make the 3d assets look like 2d painted images. Can't remember much more than that.

STANDARD CORE

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/ba91ee1dcc0885a61eeb914f534dfb6f

This was a project I made in two days, there isn't much to it. Just a little art and the ability to jump. Nothing crazy, but looking at it now I dunno why I stopped working on it. I think it was built in Stencyl. Was going for a Megaman vibe if memory serves.

SPACE SHIP WALKER

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/0deec5ff32e821330cc43dcaf067ace1
http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/draw/4c0a38f543f0da3060af84b63c58a6d8

I think I only made this to test some tiles out. Never made more than this one room.

KNIGHT GUY

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/cfbf8eac592d8597492125c4f8aa64af

This was built to test a sprite animation technique and these tiles. Nothing special but wanted to share anyway.

CASTE

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/d044f7713856eeea9a1258f45c6cd360

Nothing more than a test of some sprite physics, kinda awful to look at now, lol. Stencyl.

SAGITARRIAN SHOOTER

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/df8f1edf085be90004e3eb3057ac7193

I don't know what I was thinking, lol. May lag on older machines.

DRAGON

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/de55304f14f5f42534f9f4ce29769375

A dragon I made, don't remmeber why lol.

WEIRD ALIEN MUSIC TOOL

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/77ff50c0213d19ac1601dffd7b02aef3

Dunno what this thing is, but it was kind of fun to mess with just now, haha. It plays sounds in a pattern over and over, left to right.

STEELCURSE CHARACTER CREATOR

http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/7bf84ceefdf9a4562c80cad0b439423c

This was the first version of Steelcurse! Bumpy and doesn't run well, kinda ugly too. But shows my first attempt at Steelcurse before rebuilding the game I eventually released.

Thanks for looking guys, you have to remember to keep creating! I took a big break, but I still make stuff from time to time. You guys have to stay inspired, and keep making games and art! Please share any of your recent stuff with me below, I'd love to see/hear it!

That's a lorra game assets you got there

Yeah I know ;_; How you been bro? All well in casaStick? :P

Honestly I wouldn't care whether there'd be another dead Alice game or not. I always wanted a decison based survival game and when you created Sagittarian, I knew this was it. People love this kind of stuff and Telltale Games sure made profit out of it.

They certainly did, I've still yet to have time to try one of their games though. I mostly hear good stuff. Kind of wish they'd hire me, haha.

Damn, that's a lot of projects. Alice is Dead will always remain my favorite. <3
Keep at it, man! You can count on me if you need some tunes ;)

I'll keep that in mind, huge fan of your music!

good stuff

Thanks!

I know I have more scrapped projects than finished ones, plenty of assets lingering around. One of my games was actually finished to about 99% except for a couple of bugs that needed removed. The programmer stopped contacting us and I didn't want to release it unfinished.

I think one of my biggest problems is I love making RPGs so much and they require a bunch of assets, lots of writing and a lot of dedicated programming time so I don't recruit programmers for a lot of them and they remain only at the concept stage with some art. Granted, I don't have as much time as I used to due to work so it's best I stick to my two active projects at a time.

I went and played several of your rpgs, I can tell a LOT of hard work went into them. Making rpgs is rewarding to do, but the public rarely knows just HOW MUCH work goes into the smallest details. In the end, it isn't worth it outside of the enjoyment of the process. I certainly never made my money back on rpgs if you count the time spent. Finding team mates to build with is always hard, that is why I primarily work alone. A good team member is worth a million bucks. Stay inspired! Keep creating! Thanks!

I was just looking through your games and I saw Hood in there. I still remember playing that but I refuse to be live that those games came out 3 years ago. It's just making me feel old (like.. "Newgrounds old")

No kidding! I feel so old... lol I just started making flash games I swear!

Rebel Sky looks and plays pretty cool!

Thanks! Haha, have a good one!

Am glad your still active in newgrounds. I remember I was introduction to newgrounds by a friend in 2003 when I was in middle school and game dev and voice actors have come and gone but your games make us want to come back and visit the site :)

Really appreciate that man! Hope all is well, stay cool! :D

O I was going to say one more thing I really hope you continue MANE and INFINITE PARADIGM. MANE remind me of Pragaras the flash game here in newgrounds. INFINITE PARADIGM seem really cool because you can pick your crews and no doubt it would have affect the story. However we all got lives and we all got to pay the bill. Really appreciate your games and reading my comment again.

Thanks a lot! I always loved both of those projects. It's hard to make games and make a living at the same time though, for sure haha.

These are some little treasures for a fan, thank you .By the way, I checked and I saw that from many games you created, you have only one game on Steam, the Wolfsong(which I bought). Why is that?

Honestly, getting a game on Steam, and managing it, has been a terrible nightmare. I've not yet built up the energy to try it again haha, I wish I could just get paid to make games for people, and let them have them for free haha. Dream job.

I gotta say I love your work, I did start with the Alice is Dead (a game series I still adore) but I ended up keeping an eye on your game because of the amazing stories you have. Of course they are backed up with your art style, I wish I could draw like you do. I just want to thank you for so many amazing games and I cannot wait to see what you do next.

I really really appreciate the supportive feedback man. Thank you.
