Starshroud

Posted by Hyptosis - December 13th, 2013

I've been working on a new game the past couple of days, called Starshroud. It is a space-themed rpg. I want to really invest in exploration and character interaction. I know these kinds of old school games aren't for everyone, and that's okay. I'm really enjoying working on it.

Here is a tiny snippet, this is VERY early, so don't judge too hard yet.

I'd love to know what you guys think though, what you might expect. Etc. Thanks guys! Stay gold.

It looks pretty good i'd might try it if i could.

Thanks!

It looks quite fine, i wonder if the combat is real time based and without cooldowns!

Thank you!

Hey Hypto , how you doin bro?

I rly love the looks of it , it brings a sweet aura of nostalgia :D I think the clasic would be to add a final fantasy kind of combat but maybe real-time action would make it a little bit more lively. The upside with turn based fights however is that you get to create better visuals for your characters and monsters in order to make the game more appealing. Ofcourse it would demand much more time. Either way i trust it will be a great game! Best of luck with finishing it!

Yeah dude, hard to say. I prefer turn based combat, but almost every game I've released players have expressed a dislike for it. I dunno what the solution is there, I LIKE turn-based combat. I think it's fun. Games like Epic Battle Fantasy are nothing but turn based combat, so I'm clearly just building it wrong because those games seem to do just fine.

Welcome to RPG Maker. There's no way it's not that.

Here's hoping you can make something excellent - at the very least I know the art will be amazing.

(Oh also, I love turn-based combat. The only improvement over it that I've seen is the battle system of Grandia - and if you don't know that game, you seriously need to look it up and check it out even if it means running it on an emulator.)

I'm finding it quite disappointing that making a game is not as fun as playing it, sometimes. In your case you should thoroughly check if your game is more fun to make than to play.

Looks good man, the GUI is very clean looking.

Hey thanks dude, although that part isn't finished of course. ^_^

It looks really cool, man. I'm a big RPG fan myself, got a few in the works too, so it's always nice to see other people developing some. I can't wait to see more of the art for it!

Hey thanks man, yeah I love the classics and really miss them. Modern games are great, but I don't get that warm feeling in my belly like I did in the old days.

You should work for Square-Enix

I wanted to as a kid, I know better now. :P

The game looks great cant wait to try it out

Thanks!

enjoying it is the most important part and this looks great! these sort of games are always good. i personally like these sort of rpg's and we can teach these young-ins about what games used to look like! >:D oh, gameboy color. *ahem* anyway... i like the concept and i dont come across many good space-themed rpg's than i'd like so im eager to see this. are you going to do some sort of level/area to establish how she crashed there? that could be interesting. looks good!

Yeah certainly, everything will be explained. I really miss the old rpgs, wish more studios still made them. I still play them even today.

I like what I see so far, although story and exploration are one thing in RPG's. Game play is another, think you can put on your programming face to surpass the previous RPG games you have made?

You need to implement diagonal movement... really
Is rthis flash? Otherwise, What are you using to develop tjhis? Hard to judge anything from so little gameplay shown but keep up the good work PAL

The way you move around looks booooring. Agreed with Joelasticot to add some diagonal movement..

Not bad. I'm just impressed of the fact how much games you can develop at once.

Hey thanks. It's taken a few years but I feel like I've figured out how to juggle projects fairly well.

About the combat system (turn based or not) you could do turn based with speed difference, like in Chrono Trigger (though I think that's hard to add to the game). It would solve the boredom we get from playing turn after turn, because time would be a key element, the essence of "future" itself.

Also, diagonal movement would be nice, but if you are going to use RPG Maker all the game, we could probably learn to live without those.

Yeah, I dunno if I can get diagonal movement working or not, but honestly I'm not crazy about it anyway. I always liked good grid movement, it's clear if you're looking at something when you try to interact with it, it's clear if you can move down passages and such, everything is so much more clear. You're never trying to align with objects or catching yourself on corners.
